the health system in Tacna

So, here I am. It's Thursday and I'm trying to make headaway on life and it seems so slow. In addition the pregnancy has it's own needs that I can't neglect. It seems everything comes at the same time. It has in actuality been 2 months since I have seen a doctor for a through exam, and I have to start all over here and figure out where/who/what we are going to do. Not something, like a box, that can wait.

I had the ultrasound a month ago and he took my pressure, but that is really it. So, it's important, but not urgent. We've been asking around to get a handle on the medical facilities here and how to go about finding a doctor etc. We got several suggestions from friends who live here, but we also decided to start with EsSalud. This is the health system in Peru for those with insurance from companies it seems. Richard's company pays for him and for me. So, I can use the system, but it doesn't mean it's the top care. You still have to investigate etc. There is another state run system for those without health insurance (that hospital is down the block). Then there are clinics and people who do private practice. Basically, you pay out of pocket and with EsSalud it costs less or nothing as it is with insurance. We also have another type of private insurance, but they won't cover any of the pregnancy because you have to have 6 months on the policy first. Anyway, It is all very confusing.

We find out that there is an American who is a pediatrician who works with EsSalud. So, I figure check her out and see if she can guide me in the right direction. I want to find a doctor who will work with us for the type of natural birth that I want. I have a birth plan I'd like to try to follow. It's easier in Lima, but less so in the provinces to find people who are knowledgable about various "advancements" like they do in birth center.

I won't bore you, as I normally do, with the details. I'll just say this.......more paperwork! When I went to find out about getting an appointment with her I findout we have to do some change from Ilo to Tacna as we are changing what would be like a county. Patience Laura. So of course it isn't as simple as it should be because the HR office who has to sign it from his work is in Arequipa. So...who knows how that's going to be done, but I estimate 7-10 days at least to get that done.

However, we still try to track down this doctor whose name is Finklestein when we go to the health center today. With some persistence we get her phone numbers and address......haha. yep. such privacy. She isn't working today she tells me as she is painting her house. She isn't American. She is from Lima but her family is from Europe.....you think? a name like Finkenstein? Anyway, she gives us a recommendation of a private doctor, Vizcarra, which as it turns out is the same name as 2 other people gave us! So, she might be the one. No appointments for today, but tomorrow at 6pm. So, tomorrow is another day. Slowly we are making headway. I really need to get into another level of patience. I mean I need to move ahead, but be relaxed about it. I can do it most days, but as with everything. Some days are easier than others. I hope today finds you in good health and spirit and sending lots of love from me!
