Crazy, Sad Story

Well, I don't know how I get myself into these situations. I suppose it has to do with being open and friendly and wanting to help...maybe this is an inherited trait (mom?) Anyway, here is the story.

So Richard has been attending Confirmation classes for the past 6 weeks. Saturday nights from 7-9. Anyway one week there was a couple who attended. Most people in the adult confirmation class are couples because it is a requisite to get married in the Catholic Church here you have to be Confirmed. Anyway, the next week we saw them after Sunday morning Mass. We chatted for a few moments about the classes etc. To make the story brief....

The man (Rolando) is originally from Ilo. He left and went to the USA (this part is fuzzy). He has been living there for the past 11 years. He was married in Peru and has 2 children. He brought his wife and children to the USA a few years ago and says he is now divorced. The woman, Giovanna, is from Arequipa. She too is divorced and has 2 grown children.

Okay so 6 years ago they met in Peru and then he went back to the US. They kept in contact over the phone these past 6 years. Fast forward. He came to Peru and they wanted to get married in the church (complicated) and then do the paperwork to get her to visit the USA and then return to Peru and live in Ilo. Anyway, it seemed like we had things to talk about, so we all met up at the beach later that day and talked and danced and had a great time for hours.

During this time she asked if I would be her godmother. She was never baptised. So I said yes. The part where it gets weird. The next day Rolando went to see Richard at work and asked him for a personal loan of $500. Richard said he had to ask me about it and he'd let him know later. Then he looked into his name etc and found out he knew his brother and found some other personal info in the bank data system. So he was a little suspect, but I was trying to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

So that Wed am we had a private baptism ceremony for Giovanna. So now I have a 3rd godchild...so to speak. Well, they also have godparents for weddings here. They are supposed to be a married couple. So I offered Richard's parents. That Friday they were married in a small ceremony and reception. Richard didn't go. He was working.

Well, her daughter never liked him. No one seemed to have positive feeling about him, but who am I to judge? Well, the next week we saw one of her daughters at the beach and told me things were really bad with her mom and then the next day she called me. I don't want to get into the ridiculous details, but he was bad news. He took things from a dental clinic that they had opened together. He was treating her very differently and gotten loans from others etc. I don't know what happened really, but she kicked him out and now he is gone. So yea...guess I'm not always the best judge of character. She seems to have recovered okay. I don't know. I'm a sucker for love. So that is my story.
